OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE OF SYSTEM AMAC

EVALUATION OF SIGN RETROREFLECTIVITY MEASUREMENTS FROM THE ADVANCED MOBILE ASSET COLLECTION (AMAC) SYSTEM

Performing of the survey

  • The measuring vehicle carries out the measurements at nighttime without a need of a safety escort. It considers the road traffic regulations.
  • It does not cause glare to other users.
  • The measurement of the parameters for the evaluating of the data will be performed independently of the presence of other vehicles or uncontrolled external light sources, etc.
  • Measurements needs to be performed without rain and without condensation (the vehicle is equipped with sensors to detect dew point)
  • The measuring vehicle drives at nighttime, at the traffic speed without creating any disruption in the traffic flow and is composed of the following main components:
    • Image acquisition module to measure the photometric properties of the traffic signs.

     

    • Additional lighting system, non-glaring for road users, in order to be provide measurements independents of the influence of any other external light source.
    • Global Positioning system to provide an accurate position of the acquired images in the measuring test.
    • Electronic and IT devices to data storage and synchronization of all devices in the vehicle.
    • Other auxiliary elements.

     

    Processing and analysis

    • All the collected data will be processed automatically after the measurement of the road sections. The following parameters will be determined:

     

    • Coefficient of retroreflectivity (α=0.33º, β≈5º) for the background, the legend and a third color if that exist on the sign. For those in which, due to its geometrical installation conditions it is not geometrically possible to measure the retroreflectivity at the specified geometry, this would be measure at a different geometry (for example α=0.5º, β≈5º) that is more representative of the actual geometry the driver is facing the traffic sign
    • Location of signs (GPS coordinates).
    • Traffic sign width and height (m).
    • Traffic sign height over the carriageway.

    Color picture of each traffic sign.

    It will be generated automatically reports of the measured road sections.
